Google AI Overviews Optimisation for New Zealand Businesses
When someone in New Zealand searches Google for a service you offer, the first thing they may see is an AI Overview: a short generated summary with links to the pages it drew on. If your website is not one of those links, the searcher can form a view of your market without seeing your name. Google AI Overviews optimisation is the work of making your pages clear, accessible and trustworthy enough to be chosen as supporting links. It rests on the same foundations as good SEO, and we follow Google’s published guidance rather than shortcuts. It sits within our wider AI search services.

What Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are
AI Overviews are generated summaries that appear at the top of some Google results. Google describes them as a way to help people get to the gist of a complicated topic quickly, with links to explore further. AI Mode is a separate, more conversational experience for questions that need reasoning, comparison or several follow up questions.
Both features may use what Google calls a query fan out technique. The system runs several related searches across subtopics, then shows a wider set of supporting links than a classic results page. That means a page can be cited for one part of an answer even when it is not the top result for the main query.
Google also says AI Overviews only appear when its systems decide they add something beyond classic results, so many searches do not trigger one. The two features can use different models, so the links they show will vary.
- AI Overviews are summaries shown above the results for selected queries.
- AI Mode is a conversational search experience with supporting links.
- Both draw on pages that are already in Google’s index.
Why your business may be missing from AI Overviews
Most businesses that are absent from AI Overviews are not being penalised. The cause is usually ordinary, and usually fixable.
Common reasons we find include:
- Pages that Google cannot crawl or index, often because of a robots.txt rule, a noindex tag or a hosting firewall that blocks Googlebot.
- Important information held in images, PDFs or scripts rather than readable text.
- Service pages that describe the business in general terms without answering the questions customers actually ask.
- Structured data that does not match what is visible on the page.
- A Google Business Profile with old hours, a wrong address or a missing category.
- Thin internal linking, so Google struggles to work out which page covers which topic.
Each of these weakens the page in classic search as well, which is why the fixes pay off twice. The cost of leaving them is quiet rather than dramatic. Competitors who answer the question clearly become the reference point, and your business is left out of the summary. A short review usually shows which of these apply to your site, and our local SEO work covers the Business Profile side.
What Google says about appearing in AI features
Google Search Central publishes guidance for site owners on AI features, and it is more straightforward than much of the commentary online. Google states that the same foundational SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode as to Search overall. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no additional technical requirements.
Google also says specific optimisation is not required, while confirming that existing SEO fundamentals remain worthwhile. Its own list includes:
- Allowing crawling in robots.txt and in any CDN or hosting setup.
- Making content easy to find through internal links.
- Providing a good page experience.
- Keeping important content in text form, supported by quality images and video.
- Making sure structured data matches the visible text.
- Keeping Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date.
We treat this as the starting point. Anyone who claims a secret method or a special relationship with Google is making a claim Google itself warns against. Our work is to apply the published guidance thoroughly and to explain every recommendation we make.
How we approach Google AI Overviews optimisation
Our approach is practical and based on evidence. We work through the factors Google has published, in the order that matters most for your site.
- Access: we check that Googlebot can crawl and index your key pages, including any CDN or security rules that might block it.
- Clarity: we rewrite or restructure service pages so each one answers real customer questions in plain, specific language.
- Coverage: we map the related questions a searcher is likely to ask next, so a page can support more of an answer.
- Structured data: we add or correct schema.org markup so it matches what people see on the page, through our schema and entity work.
- Entity consistency: we align your business name, address, phone number and descriptions across your website and Google Business Profile.
- Page experience: we review speed, mobile layout and intrusive elements with your developer, or ours.
Each change is documented, so you know what was done and why. If your site needs deeper work, we bring in our technical SEO and website speed services rather than patching around the problem. For visibility beyond Google, see our generative engine optimisation and LLM SEO services.

How we measure AI Overviews performance
Google does not offer a separate AI Overviews report. According to Google Search Central, traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type, together with the rest of your organic search data. That shapes how we report.
We use Google Search Console and GA4 together to track:
- Impressions and clicks for the queries and pages we have worked on.
- Changes in the questions that bring people to your site.
- What visitors do after they arrive, including enquiries, calls and form submissions.
Google has said that when people click through from results pages with AI Overviews, those visits tend to be higher quality, with people more likely to spend more time on the site. We judge success by enquiries and engagement rather than screenshots of a single summary, because AI Overviews vary by user, location and time. Where it helps, we also record manual checks of priority queries, noting the date and context so the evidence is fair. Reports are written in plain English and cover what changed, what we learned and what comes next. Our process page explains how reporting fits into each engagement.
What we will not promise
No one can guarantee that a page will appear in an AI Overview. Google decides when a summary is shown and which links support it, and those decisions change. We do not guarantee rankings, traffic or AI citations, and we are wary of anyone who does.
What we do commit to:
- Following Google Search Essentials and the Search Central guidance on AI features.
- Explaining every recommendation and the reasoning behind it.
- Asking only for read only access to Search Console at the audit stage.
- Being clear about costs before any work begins, with no hidden extras.
- Telling you when AI Overviews are unlikely to matter for your searches, so your budget goes where it counts.
We also help you control how your content appears. Google provides preview controls such as nosnippet and noindex for pages you would rather keep out of summaries. We explain the trade offs before you use them, because those controls also affect how your pages appear in classic search results. Our job is steady, sustainable improvement you can verify for yourself, not a promise that cannot be kept.
Frequently asked questions about Google AI Overviews
Do I need special optimisation to rank in AI Overviews? Google says there are no additional technical requirements. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Strong SEO fundamentals and clear, helpful content are what matter.
Can you guarantee my business will appear in an AI Overview? No. Google decides when an AI Overview appears and which pages it links to. We improve your eligibility and clarity, and we report honestly on the results.
How is Google AI Mode SEO different from AI Overviews optimisation? The foundations are the same. AI Mode handles longer, more complex questions and comparisons, so pages that cover a topic in depth and answer likely follow up questions tend to be more useful as supporting links.
How will I know if it is working? We track impressions, clicks and enquiries in Google Search Console and GA4. Google includes AI feature traffic in the Search Console Web search type, so we focus on trends for the pages and queries we have improved.
Does structured data help? Google asks that structured data matches the visible text on the page. It helps Google understand your business, although Google does not describe it as a requirement for AI Overviews.
Can I stop my content appearing in AI Overviews? Yes, using preview controls such as nosnippet or noindex. These also limit how your pages appear in regular results, so we discuss the trade offs with you first.
