Link Building NZ and Local Citations That Build Real Authority
Be seen, be heard, be found, trusted and cited online.
Links and citations are how the rest of the web vouches for your business. Net Branding Limited, trading as seocompanynz.com, earns links from relevant New Zealand and international websites and builds accurate local citations on the directories your customers and Google already use. We do not buy links, rent links or join link schemes. We have worked in digital marketing since 2008, and every recommendation we make has to hold up for years, not weeks.
Not sure whether your backlink profile is helping or holding you back? We will review your links, citations and Google Business Profile and tell you plainly what we find.
Why links and citations still decide who gets found
You can have the best website in your industry and still sit on page three. When two businesses publish similar content, search engines look outside each website for evidence of which one is more trusted. That evidence comes from the sites that link to you, the directories that list you, and the consistency of your business details across the web.
Off page SEO is the name for this work. It covers:
- Editorial links from relevant websites, publications and industry bodies.
- Local citations, which are listings of your business name, address and phone number on directories and maps.
- Brand mentions, reviews and the wider footprint that shows you are a real, active organisation.
AI search tools draw on the same signals. When ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews choose which businesses to name, they lean on sources they already trust. A business that is referenced by credible websites and listed consistently is easier for those systems to recognise as a distinct entity.
The cost of ignoring this is quiet but real. Competitors with fewer skills but more mentions keep taking the enquiries that should be yours.
What link building NZ looks like when it is done properly
Good link building is closer to public relations than to software. It starts with something worth linking to and a reason for another site to care. Our link building work for New Zealand organisations includes:
- Link profile and competitor analysis, so we know which links your competitors have earned and which gaps matter most.
- Content led link earning, such as practical guides, local data and resources that other sites want to reference.
- Digital PR and expert commentary, pitching your knowledge to NZ media, trade publications and industry newsletters.
- Industry and association links, through memberships, supplier and partner pages, sponsorships and events you already take part in.
- Unlinked mention recovery, finding places that already name your business and asking for a link.
- Broken link replacement, suggesting your resource where a relevant page points to something that no longer exists.
Each link is judged on relevance, editorial placement and whether it could send you a real visitor. One link from a respected NZ industry site usually does more than dozens from unrelated blogs. We report every link we secure, where it sits and why it was chosen, so you always know what you are paying for.
Local citations NZ: getting your listings right
For any business that serves a town, region or service area, citations are the foundation of local visibility. A citation is any listing of your business name, address and phone number. Search engines compare these listings to decide whether your business details can be trusted. Mismatched phone numbers, old addresses or duplicate listings weaken that trust and can confuse customers.
Our local citation work covers:
- An audit of your existing listings, duplicates and inconsistencies.
- Cleaning up and claiming core platforms such as Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places.
- Building listings on established New Zealand directories such as Finda and Yellow NZ, plus trade and review platforms where they suit your industry, for example NoCowboys or Builderscrack for trades.
- Industry and association directories, such as professional body member listings where your membership allows one.
- Local business association and chamber listings where you are a member.
We build fewer, better listings rather than hundreds of low quality ones. Citations work alongside the rest of your local SEO, especially your Google Business Profile and location pages.
If you would rather talk it through first, Cathy can look at your current listings and links with you and explain where the quick fixes are.
Our stance on paid links and link schemes
We are explicit about what we will not do. We do not purchase links, participate in link schemes, use private blog networks, or trade links in bulk. Google Search Central’s spam policies describe buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam, including exchanging money, goods or services for links, and excessive link exchanges. Sites that rely on these tactics risk losing rankings, and recovery is slow and costly.
That does not mean every paid relationship is off limits. Sponsorships, advertising and paid partnerships are normal business. The difference is that those links should be marked with the rel=”sponsored” or rel=”nofollow” attributes, as Google asks, so they are not presented as editorial endorsements.
If you have used a cheap link package in the past, we will tell you honestly what we find. We can identify risky links, recommend removal where it is practical, and decide with you whether a disavow file is warranted. Most businesses do not need one, and we will not suggest it unless the evidence supports it.
Our approach is slower than buying links. It is also the approach that still works after the next algorithm update.
How we plan and measure a link building campaign
Every campaign follows the same clear sequence, so you know what is happening and when.
- Audit. We review your backlinks, citations, Google Business Profile and competitor link profiles, and we check the pages you want to rank are technically sound and worth linking to.
- Plan. We agree target pages, link and citation priorities, and the content or assets needed to earn coverage.
- Fix the foundations. Citations are cleaned up first, because consistent business details support everything else.
- Outreach. We contact relevant sites personally, never through mass emails.
- Report. You receive a plain English report listing new links and citations, lost links, and movement in rankings, referral traffic and enquiries.
We measure quality over volume. Useful measures include referring domains from relevant sites, citation accuracy, local pack visibility, referral visits and enquiries. Domain metrics from third party tools can help, but they are estimates and we treat them that way.
Results from link building build over months. We cannot guarantee rankings, traffic or AI citations, and no honest agency can. What we can promise is clear work, done to best practice, with every step visible to you. You can read more about how we work.
Who this service suits
Link building and citations help any organisation that competes for attention in search, but the mix changes by business type.
- Trades and home services usually need citations, Google Business Profile strength and local links first. See our work for trades.
- Professional services such as law firms and accountants benefit most from authority links, association listings and expert commentary.
- Ecommerce stores need links that point to category and guide pages, supported by ecommerce SEO.
- Business associations and community organisations can earn links naturally through events, member directories and local news. See business community.
Links work best when the pages they point to deserve them. That is why link building usually sits alongside on page SEO, technical SEO and clear entity data through schema and entity optimisation.
We work with organisations across New Zealand from our Auckland office at 165 Orakei Road, Remuera, Auckland, New Zealand, as well as international clients. Pricing depends on your market and goals, and we always quote the scope in writing before work begins.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between link building and off page SEO?
Link building is one part of off page SEO. Off page SEO also includes local citations, brand mentions, digital PR, reviews and the wider web presence that shows search engines and AI systems your business is trusted. We plan them together because each supports the others.
Do you buy links?
No. We do not purchase links, take part in link schemes or use private blog networks. Google’s spam policies treat buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam. Where a sponsorship or paid placement makes business sense, the link should be marked rel=”sponsored”.
What are local citations and do they still matter?
Local citations are listings of your business name, address and phone number on directories, maps and review sites. They help search engines confirm your details are accurate, and they help customers find you. They matter most for businesses that serve a local area.
Which NZ directories should my business be listed on?
Start with Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places, then established NZ directories such as Finda and Yellow NZ. After that, the right listings depend on your industry, such as trade platforms, professional body directories or local business associations.
How long does link building take to work?
Citation clean up can help within weeks. Earned links usually take several months to influence rankings, because good placements take time to secure and search engines take time to reassess. We report progress monthly so you can see what is happening.
Can you guarantee first page rankings?
No. Nobody controls Google’s rankings or AI citations. We focus on best practice, relevant links and accurate citations, which are the factors that support sustainable visibility.
Does link building help with AI search?
Yes. AI tools tend to cite and recommend sources that other trusted sites reference. Earned links, mentions and consistent citations make your business easier for those systems to identify and trust. Learn more about AI search.
