AI Content Optimisation That Earns Citations
When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews a question about your field, the answer is assembled from sources those systems trust. AI content optimisation is the work of making your expertise one of those sources. Net Branding Limited has worked in digital marketing since 2008, and we help New Zealand and international organisations turn what they know into content that people value and AI systems can find, understand and cite. This service is part of our AI search services.

Why good content still gets left out of AI answers
Plenty of organisations have accurate, well written websites and still never appear in AI generated answers. The content is not wrong. It is simply hard for an AI system to use.
AI search tools work by retrieving pages related to a question, then drawing on the passages that answer it most clearly and credibly. Google describes this approach, known as retrieval augmented generation or grounding, in its guidance on generative AI features. Content that buries the answer, repeats what every other site says or gives no sign of who wrote it gives these systems little reason to choose it.
The patterns we see most often are:
- Pages that describe a service in marketing language but never answer the questions buyers actually ask.
- Generic articles that restate common knowledge without any first hand experience or local detail.
- No author, no date and no source for important claims.
- Useful information locked inside PDFs, images or long unstructured paragraphs.
- Content that was accurate once but has not been reviewed in years.
The good news is that your organisation already holds the most valuable ingredient: real expertise. The work is making it visible.
How AI content optimisation differs from on page SEO
On page SEO and AI content optimisation overlap, but they aim at different moments in a search. Our on page SEO service focuses on helping a page rank in traditional results: titles, headings, keyword targeting, internal links and the elements that earn a click. AI content optimisation focuses on what happens after retrieval, when an AI system decides which passages to quote, summarise or credit.
| Focus | On page SEO | AI content optimisation |
|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Rank and earn the click | Be selected, summarised and cited |
| Unit of attention | The whole page | Individual passages and answers |
| Key signals | Relevance, titles, headings, links | Clarity, originality, evidence, author credibility |
| Typical output | Optimised page elements | Rewritten answers, new expert content, source and author improvements |
| Measured by | Rankings, clicks, enquiries | Mentions and citations in AI answers, plus enquiries |
Most organisations need both, and they support each other. Google states that its generative AI features are rooted in its core ranking systems, so a page that cannot rank is unlikely to be used as a source. This page explains the citation side of the work.
What we optimise so AI systems can use your content
Our AI content optimisation work starts from your existing pages and your team’s knowledge, then improves the content so it serves human readers and AI systems at the same time.
- Question mapping. We identify the real questions your buyers ask, including the related questions AI tools generate behind the scenes, and map each one to the page that should answer it.
- Direct answers. We rewrite key passages so the answer comes first, in plain language, followed by the detail and context.
- Original substance. We draw out first hand experience, local examples and professional judgement that generic content cannot copy.
- Evidence and sourcing. We check claims for accuracy and link to credible sources such as government, standards bodies and primary research.
- Author and organisation signals. We make it clear who wrote each piece, what qualifies them and when it was last reviewed.
- Structure that helps readers. We use clear headings, short sections, lists and tables where they genuinely aid understanding.
- Content gaps. Where your site has no good answer to an important question, we plan and create new content with your team.
Clear structured data supports this work by describing your organisation and authors accurately. Our schema and entity markup service covers that layer.
What Google says, and the myths we avoid
There is a growing industry of AI content tricks. We prefer to work from what search engines have actually published, because chasing hacks wastes your budget and can damage trust.
Google’s guidance on generative AI features in Search, updated in 2026, makes several points worth knowing:
- Unique, helpful, people first content is likely to influence presence in generative AI search more than any other factor.
- You do not need special AI text files, a separate Markdown version of your site or special markup to appear in Google’s generative AI features.
- There is no requirement to break content into tiny chunks or to rewrite it in a special style for AI systems.
- Creating many near duplicate pages to target every query variation can breach Google’s scaled content abuse policy.
- Seeking inauthentic mentions across the web is not an effective strategy.
Other AI platforms work differently and change often, so we test how your content appears across several tools rather than assume one approach fits all. Our generative engine optimisation and LLM SEO services look at those platforms in more depth.

Our process for optimising content for LLMs
Large language models do not reward volume. They reward clear, credible answers. Our process is built around improving fewer pages properly rather than producing a flood of new ones.
Review
We test a set of questions your buyers ask across AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and record whether your organisation is mentioned, how it is described and which sources are cited instead. We also review your most important pages for accuracy, clarity and evidence.
Prioritise
You receive a short list of the pages and questions with the best chance of improvement, ordered by business value. We explain the reasoning in plain language so you can decide what to do first.
Improve
We rewrite and restructure priority content with input from you and your team, because your experience is what makes content worth citing. Where new content is needed, we plan it together and write it in your voice.
Measure
We repeat the question tests over time and use Google Search Console, including its reporting on generative AI features, together with GA4 to see whether visibility and enquiries are moving. AI answers vary between sessions and users, so we look for patterns over several checks rather than react to a single result. Our AI visibility audit can be run on its own if you want a baseline first.
Who AI content optimisation is for
AI content optimisation suits organisations whose buyers research carefully before they make contact. These buyers increasingly ask AI tools to explain options, compare providers or summarise what to look for.
- Professional services firms, such as lawyers, accountants and advisers, whose expertise is their product.
- Trades and home services businesses that answer the same customer questions every week and could publish those answers well.
- Health, wellbeing and other organisations where accuracy and trust matter more than volume.
- Organisations with large content libraries written years ago that have never been reviewed for accuracy or clarity.
- Businesses that use AI writing tools and want a human editor to make sure the output is accurate, original and genuinely useful.
If you are rebuilding your website, it is easier to plan content and structure for AI search from the beginning. Our AI ready websites are built with that in mind. Frequently asked questions
What is AI content optimisation?
AI content optimisation is the practice of improving and creating content so that AI search tools can find it, understand it and cite it, while it stays genuinely useful for human readers.
Is this the same as using AI to write content?
No. Some people use the phrase to mean using AI tools to edit content. Our service is about making content worth citing by AI systems. We may use AI tools to support research, but a person checks every fact and every page reflects your real expertise.
Does content need to be written differently for AI search?
Not in a special style. Google says there is no need to rewrite content just for its AI features. Clear answers, original insight, sound evidence and visible authorship help people and AI systems alike.
Can you optimise our existing content?
Yes. Most engagements start with existing pages, because improving what you already have is usually faster and more valuable than starting again.
Will this make content less readable for our customers?
No. The changes that help AI systems, such as clearer answers, better structure and stronger evidence, also make content easier for people to read.
Can you guarantee that ChatGPT or Google will cite us?
No one can guarantee AI citations, and we do not. AI systems decide which sources to use, and answers vary. We focus on the qualities those systems are known to value and report honestly on what changes.
How do you measure AI visibility?
We run repeated question tests across AI tools and combine them with Google Search Console and GA4 data. We look for trends over time rather than single results.
Do you work with organisations outside Auckland?
Yes. We work with organisations across New Zealand from our Auckland office, mainly by video call and shared documents, as well as with international clients.
