Shopify Web Design NZ: Ecommerce Websites Built to Be Found and Bought From
An online store has two jobs. It has to be found by people who are ready to buy, and it has to make buying easy once they arrive. Many stores do one well and the other poorly. Net Branding Limited, trading online as seocompanynz.com, provides Shopify web design in NZ and WooCommerce development with search built in from the first sketch. We have worked in digital marketing since 2008, so we design stores around how shoppers search, compare and decide, not only around how the homepage looks.
Already selling online but unsure why traffic or sales have stalled? We will review your store’s structure, product pages, speed and search visibility, and tell you plainly what we find.
Why many online stores struggle to sell
Most ecommerce problems are not caused by the platform. They come from decisions made during the build that nobody revisited. A store can look polished and still lose customers at every step.
Common problems we see include:
- Category pages with no useful text, so they have little chance of ranking.
- Product descriptions copied from suppliers, which repeat what dozens of other stores say.
- Filters and variants that create thousands of near identical URLs.
- Heavy themes and too many apps, which slow pages on mobile.
- A checkout that asks for too much, too early.
- Shipping costs and return policies that are hard to find until the last step.
- Tracking that does not record sales properly, so nobody knows which channels work.
Each issue costs a little. Together they mean you pay more to win every sale. The good news is that most of these problems are visible in a careful review and can be fixed in a planned order. The first step is knowing which ones affect your store the most.
Shopify web design in NZ, built around how people buy
Shopify is a hosted platform. It looks after servers, security updates and the core checkout, which leaves you free to focus on products and customers. For many New Zealand retailers that is the right trade off: less technical upkeep and a checkout shoppers already trust.
Our Shopify web design covers:
- Store structure planned from keyword research, so collections match how people search.
- Theme selection or customisation, chosen for speed and flexibility rather than looks alone.
- Collection and product page templates with room for helpful, original content.
- Clear shipping, returns and contact information on every product page.
- App selection kept to what the store genuinely needs.
- Structured data for products, so search engines can read prices, availability and reviews correctly.
- Analytics and conversion tracking set up and tested before launch.
We also handle the details that are easy to miss, such as GST settings, NZ shipping zones and payment options your customers expect.
WooCommerce development for stores that need more control
WooCommerce is a free, open source ecommerce plugin for WordPress. It suits organisations that already run a WordPress site, want full ownership of their store, or need features that are awkward on a hosted platform.
WooCommerce development makes sense when:
- Your content and your store need to live closely together, such as a publisher or a business with extensive guides.
- You need custom pricing, membership access, bookings or trade accounts.
- You want to choose your own hosting and own every part of the stack.
- You have an existing WordPress site that works well and only needs selling features added.
The trade off is responsibility. With WooCommerce, hosting, updates, backups and security sit with you or your provider. We build WooCommerce stores on lean themes, keep plugins to a minimum and offer ongoing care through our website hosting service. If you are already on WordPress, see our WordPress websites page for how we approach builds on that platform.
Shopify or WooCommerce: choosing the right platform
There is no single best platform. The right choice depends on your products, your team and how much technical responsibility you want to carry. We give an honest recommendation, even when it is not the option that involves the most work for us.
| Consideration | Shopify | WooCommerce |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting and security | Managed by Shopify. | Managed by you or your host. |
| Ongoing costs | Monthly plan plus any paid apps. | Hosting, maintenance and any paid plugins. |
| Ease of daily use | Simple admin built for selling. | Familiar if your team already uses WordPress. |
| Content and blogging | Capable, with some limits. | Very flexible. |
| Custom features | Through apps or custom development. | Through plugins or custom code. |
| Ownership | Your data, on Shopify’s platform. | Your data and your code, on your hosting. |
If neither fits, for example where a store needs complex integrations with stock or accounting systems, our custom website development service covers bespoke builds. Whichever platform you choose, the search foundations matter as much as the software.
Ecommerce website design NZ with SEO in the build, not added later
Search engine optimisation is far cheaper to build in than to retrofit. Because we are an SEO company first, the decisions that affect rankings are made during design, not after launch.
Every ecommerce build includes:
- A collection and category structure mapped to real search demand.
- Unique title tags, meta descriptions and headings for key templates.
- Handling for filters, variants and pagination so search engines are not flooded with duplicate pages.
- Canonical tags, XML sitemaps and a robots.txt file reviewed for your store.
- Product and organisation structured data based on schema.org.
- Image compression, lazy loading and lean code aimed at good Core Web Vitals.
- Internal links between related collections, guides and products.
These steps follow Google Search Central guidance. After launch, our ecommerce SEO service builds on this foundation with content, technical improvements and visibility in AI shopping answers. For deeper structured data work, see schema and entity optimisation.

Moving your store without losing rankings or sales
Many stores we work with are not starting from scratch. They are moving from an older platform, a hosted builder, or from WooCommerce to Shopify or the reverse. A replatform is a good chance to fix long standing problems, but it is also the moment a store is most likely to lose search visibility.
The risk comes from changed URLs. Product and collection addresses almost always change between platforms. If old URLs are not redirected to the right new ones, customers hit error pages and search engines treat the new pages as unknown.
Our approach includes:
- A full crawl and export of every current product, collection, page and image URL.
- A one to one redirect map for important pages, checked before launch.
- Migration of titles, descriptions, product data and customer records where the platforms allow.
- Testing on a staging store before the switch.
- Close monitoring in Google Search Console after launch.
Our website migration page explains this process in detail. If the move also involves a fresh design, see website redesign.
Our ecommerce build process
A clear process keeps your project on time and makes sure nothing important is missed. You always know what is happening and what we need from you. Our full approach is set out on our process page.
- Discovery. We learn about your products, customers, margins, fulfilment and current platform.
- Research. Keyword and competitor research shape the collection structure and page priorities.
- Platform recommendation. We confirm Shopify, WooCommerce or another option, with reasons.
- Design. Wireframes and visual designs for the homepage, collections, products and checkout path.
- Build. Theme development, product setup, payment, shipping and GST configuration.
- SEO and tracking. Metadata, structured data, redirects, analytics and conversion tracking.
- Testing. Speed, devices, browsers, checkout flows and accessibility checks.
- Launch and training. Your team learns to add products, run promotions and manage orders.
After launch we can support ongoing improvements, including website speed work and landing pages for seasonal campaigns or product launches.
Frequently asked questions
Do you build Shopify stores for small businesses?
Yes. We build Shopify stores for small and growing businesses across New Zealand. We scope each project to fit the number of products, features and content you need.
Is Shopify or WooCommerce better for SEO?
Both can perform well in search when they are set up correctly. Results depend more on structure, content and technical setup than on the platform. We recommend the platform that suits your business and build the SEO foundations into either.
Can you redesign my existing Shopify store?
Yes. We can refresh the design, improve speed and fix structural issues without rebuilding everything, where that is the more sensible option.
Can you move my store to Shopify from another platform?
Yes. We plan the move carefully, map redirects from old URLs to new ones and migrate product data, so you keep as much of your existing search visibility as possible.
How much does an ecommerce website cost?
Cost depends on the number of products, templates, integrations, content writing and migration work. We provide a written scope and quote before any work begins. See website pricing for how we scope projects.
Will my store rank on Google after launch?
We build strong search foundations, but we do not guarantee rankings, traffic or AI citations. Rankings depend on competition, content and ongoing work as well as the build itself.
Do you work with retailers outside Auckland?
Yes. We work with retailers across New Zealand and internationally from our Remuera office, using video calls and shared project tools.
